Subject: About IIvx vs. 660av, which to buy?
A professional musician nearby wants to purchase a new
Macintosh in the next week. He's leaning towards
either the IIvx or the 660av. I've recommended that he
avoid the IIvx. The impression that I got from the network
was that it's a toad. It's not even listed in the current
price list of the Univ. of Chicago Campus Computer Stores!
What's the scoop? The price difference (at the store
he can buy from) is about US$1000.
Does Apple still support this model?
Upgradeability? (Good word, no?)
Ease of use?
Just how important is voice recognition? Stereo sound?
Heavy hitters can reply to me directly with full assurance
that a summary abstract will be posted back to Info-Mac.

Subject: A dumb question?
I've noticed that when I read the digests (with Easy View 2.33, but of
course...) certain words have "greater than" signs concatenated to their
immediate left. For example, the word "from" comes out ">From". Other words
(which don't quickly come to mind) do the same thing. Is this something
you'all
do, or is it something Easy View does? Is it performed to distinguish regular
"From"s from header "from"s?
Another thing...has anyone who collects all the digests noticed that we had
two
issues that were numbered the same (161)? It played havoc with the
obsessive-compulsive side of me that has all of his issues neatly lined up
with
the same naming convention ("infomacv11-XXX.txt")!!! ;} When no one skipped a
number, I had to actually name a file "infomacv11-164a.txt"!!! Horrors! But,

I dunno if anyone else has commented on this here and I missed it.
However, my experience with this ate enough of my time that I want
to make sure no one else runs into this.
Configuration: Duo (230), and Duo dock with internal drive.
Symptoms: Duo boots fine stand-alone. When docked, boots from the
internal *dock* drive and fails to mount the internal Duo drive. Tools
like SCSIprobe find the Duo drive, can mount it, and everything is
fine thereafter.
After reformatting the drive several times, and trying for 2 days to
call Apple's 800-SOS number, I finally got the answer.
It seems that *on a Duo* if you format a drive with the Apple SC HD
Setup 7.2 program, or follow the instructions in the disk utilities
update to use the 7.2 Setup program to update your disk drivers, this
happens. It is a known bug that people at Apple are working on.
Solutions: replace the driver with the older version (may only be
possible by reformatiing the drive with an old version of the utility;
I haven't tried this approach).
Or, when rebooting the docked Duo, hold down the command key to force
the boot to be from the internal disk rather than the dock.
Tip: the option-key trick works the same way if you have the dock disk
set as your startup disk and you actually want to boot from the Duo
disk.
I hope some of you find this helpful....

Hi netters !
I've seen the question before, but no answers. So, once
again: What are the possibilities for a home-brew upgrade
of a Centris 610? (I know of the consequences in respect
to the warranty.) I'd like to have a real 68040, but how
fast a crystal can I choose? 25MHz? 33MHz? How fast is the
built-in RAM and how fast would I need it for a faster CPU?
I heard rumors that the motherboard can stand a 33MHz 68040
if the RAM supports that.
Many thanks in advance for any advice you can give.

In the past, Apple has manufactured two types of mice (square version).
One was for the desktop Macs and another was a low power version for
the Portable which I assume was also necessary for the PowerBooks.
Looking over the current Apple price list, I only spotted one mouse:
the Apple Desktop Bus Mouse II (Part number: M2706LL/A). Does this
mean that there is one mouse that works on both the desktop and
PowerBooks? I am planning to order a couple and would appreciate
knowing whether the mouse draws low enough power to be used on

I've been using DEII for 4 or 5 years (!) now - almost since the original
first version. It's been a constant part of my Mac, and at first I didn't
trust it either. But then I thought - Why not TRY it & see what happens.
So I set up v2.20 to do the optimization overnight, while I'm NOT at work.
Full , largest cache, prioritize. Not a problem. I come in the next day &
things are PERFECT. It did the work without any interference from me.
So now I leave it on ALL the time, and each morning my hard drives (all of
them!) are optimized & prioritized.
I've NEVER had a problem with DE, even version 1. No conflicts.
The ONLY complaint I have is that DEII v2.20 takes up almost 213k of system
heap space! (This according to !Symbiots).

Subject: Electromagnetic Shielding for a Monitor
Hello,
Magnetic fields pose a large problem for some of the workstations in our
lab, those located in rooms next to or above a 1.5 Tesla Phillips MRI
unit. We've managed to scavenge a few mu-metal shields that CT tubes
come wrapped in, so if you know someone in a Radiology department, you
could try that. Otherwise, you could try shimming the monitor with small
magnets to restore the screen, but this is somewhat of an art and difficult
to do. However, we still have a "no colour monitor" zone in the immediate
vicinity of the MRI, since the strong field can permanently misalign the
colour guns. Only monochrome PCs and xterms are allowed in this zone.

Subject: FaxSTF Problems (SE/30 w/Daystar)
I've noticed a lot of comments about Fax STF lately, specifically with
to Now 4.x, Autodoubler 2.0.2, and installed a Daystar 50/50 SE/30
accellerator, and Micron 24 bit color card from an 8 bit card.
The Daystar is the only major change. The problem occurs with caching
the not-being-32-bit-clean problem. However, shutting off 32 bit
addressing [and rebooting] doesn't help me. First my symptoms, then
what I've tried to do:
When I go to the chooser and choose FaxPrint and then Setup, I get
the standard "control panel-like" interface. All options can be
changed, except for the second, Fax Modem. When I click this icon,
I get a message on the order of: "Error. You cannot change the
hardware settings until the Fax Monitor is loaded. Make sure it is
in your system folder and reboot." However, it is in my system
folder already. On top of that, if someone were to call me with a
fax, the modem would answer on the third ring and successfully receive
it. I know that it is loading also because at startup, after all
extensions have loaded, I get the dialog "Setting Up FaxModem".
When I call out in data modem, the modem successfully switches to
data mode and returns to fax mode at the time of disconnecting. If
the FaxStatus DA is kept open, it always displays the correct
icon, ie, Idle, DataMode, Fax (when sending) etc.
I'd like to change it so that it answers on the 1st ring and not the
third but I can't get to that setting.
I've tried booting with a minimal system (7.1). I've booted with (only)
FaxMonitor, FaxMenu, AutoDoubler, DiskDoubler, Now Extension (for Now 4.x.x),
Startup Manager and Memory Control Panel. I've done this in both 32 bit
and 24 bit modes. Always the same problem. When I boot with AutoDoubler
off, I can't even run the Chooser Document (I get the message make sure
FaxSpool Folder is in the System Folder).
When did this start happening? When I left school for the summer in May,
everything worked. I didn't use it over the summer. I did upgrade
>From Now 3 to Now 4, Copydoubler to Copydoubler 2, System 7.1 from 7.0.1*,
Micron Xceed 24 bit color from Xceed 8 bit, and I installed a Daystar
50/50 SE/30 specific accelerator. The Daystar is the only real major
change and the problem occurs with the cache on or off. There are
other upgrades (such as all new Quicktimes and Speechmanagers, but
this happens even with them off).
Now, I'm back at school and it doesn't work. Turning just about
everything off and switching addressing modes doesn't help. Any other
people have problems? Any known solutions?
My System: SE/30 w/20 meg RAM, Internal 210 Maxtor HD, Micron 24 bit
color, 32 bit enabler, Daystar 50/50, Sys 7.1, Zoom Fax Modem 14.4.
Thanks for any help anyone can offer!

Although I don't know how to get rid of the help menu, I *do* have a
suggestion if you want to save menu bar space. MICN (archived as
info-mac/gui/menu-icons-micn-19.hqx) or Menuette (archived as
info-mac/gui/menuette-112.hqx). MICN is free, Menuette is shareware,
I'm not sure how much because I don't use it. Anyway, both of these cdev's
(control panels) put icons into your menu bar instead of the names (e.g.
a pencil instead of the Edit menu, etc.). This, besides making your Mac
look really cool :) , saves a lot of room in the menu bar. This might
help those people with small screens or with applications that have
super-big, useless menus (Word comes to mind!).
Check 'em out. (They're relatively small.)

Subject: FTP over SLIP
I'm still debugging my SLIP connection. Since the only real method of
transferring files is ftp, I'd like to get that working. Unfortunately,
it's not. The throughput is abysmal, and occasionally it kind of "gets stuck"
and doesn't send anything. My current setup is
PPI PM14400FXMT modem
MacTCP 1.1.1 with the retransmit patch
InterSLIP
Xferit
I'm currently using the modem script for the PM144000FXMT modem on interslip.
I know a guy with a PeeCee (bleah) who can get it working fine with about
2.9kps throughput, which would be extremely nice if I could get it working.

Later, midi story composition systems or even midi singers!

Hi everyone,
I have recently discovered that there is a PowerBook 165 with
gray-scale screen, instead of the color screen of the 165c. Has
anyone tried it?. I would appreciate a SpeedMeter chart.
On the specifications sheet edited by Apple it does not
mention the presence of FPU on the 165, while it does on the 165c
Is it an error or has Apple been able to produce 8 different
PowerBooks without being any of them the one I want? (FPU equipped

Thank you very much.

Subject: Help please! Strange problem with ChemDraw 2.1.3 and Word 5.
Our graduate students type their research reports on a Mac (Classic
or SE) using Word 5 for text and the chemistry graphics program
ChemDraw 2.1.3 for diagrams. These have been working flawlessly in
tandem for well over a year. In the past week we have been
encountering a problem which is causing much hysteria since annual
progress reports are due in next week. As usual, graphics were
created in ChemDraw, pasted into the Word 5 text and the finished
Word documents were taken on disk to the Student Services LaserWriter
for printing. The first few pages of each document printed OK (even
if they contained graphics) but the printer then bombed out, in each
case giving a "Document Blahblah could not be printed because of a
postscript error" message. On the document itself, at the point where
printing aborted, is printed the message "ChemDraw Laser Prep not
loaded"
This problem also occurred when we tried printing the affected
documents from my own Quadra/LaserWriter II and so is clearly not a
problem of the original printer. It does not occur (so far) on
documents created on my Quadra using (different copies of) the same
software. I found that the affected documents WOULD print on my
machine if I cut the ChemDraw graphics from the Word text, pasted
them into a new ChemDraw document, then cut/pasted back into the
original Word document.
I have not had time to establish whether the problem affects all four
student Macs (I think not, though). I have run Norton Utilities and
several virus checks on the one Classic which I know to be affected
but nothing untoward emerged. The preference settings and all other
user-set variables for both applications were identical to those on
my own untroubled machine. The cut'n'paste workaround which allowed
printing from my machine did not work on the Classic even after
ChemDraw had been re-installed from the back-up disk.
Explanations and/or suggestion to solve the problem will be
gratefully recieved. Agitated postgrads are besieging my office and
my (somewhat undeserved) status as departmental MacGuru is about to
go down the tubes.

Wow, a note from Murph! Blast from the past, or what?
The very best way to do this is with a Shiva Netserial. They run
around $200 or so I think, but it's been awhile since I bought one.
These are absolutely fantastic products that put ANY serial device
on the network, just as if it were a regular network device, but
the software will let your mac think that is communicating with the
modem OR printer port directly, all the while using AppleTalk
normally. Software automatically connects to the serial device.
If you don't already have a modem, you might want to get a netmodem
instead, though it would probably cost at least as much as the
modem and netserial combo, and would be less flexible.
The Netserial is simple to set up. Just plug in the transformer
power cord, attach it's AT port to the net, and attach the serial
device to it's serial port. Install the control panel and RDEV,
select the device in the chooser, optionally configure the control
panel and Voila'!
One thing I am absolutely sure of is that there will be no
noticeable slowdown of such a small network as your daughter's.
Appletalk is slow, but it can handle this with no problem.

Apple is changing from HEPP to CPP (Collegiate Partners Program). There are
three levels. The first level requires the University to keep a significant
inventory, but the other two do not require the University to ever 'own' any
machine. The committment for the third level is low enough that even a very
small school (we are only about 1,000 strong, and have similar state school
problems) can meet their requirements. On the other hand, the Apple account
rep is _very_ non-responsive. It appears to me that Apple is going to
refocus their attention onto the old HEPP I schools, and let any other school
tag along if they want and if they can take care of themselves. This is not
so
different than the commercial sector.

The problem you will run into here is that your link to PSI is only
enabled for use with WorldLink, as I understand the deal with InterCon
Systems, makers of WorldLink. So the issue is not whether there is
other software (there is gobs of it), but if you can get another account

That I can't tell you, since it depends on your physical location

a MacTCP (and if you're using a modem, SLIP) connection.
Email - Eudora

Gopher - TurboGopher (can also be used to FTP files)
WAIS - WAIS for Mac, MacWAIS
Archie - Archie 0.9

Someone could, but there's not really any point until you have
a different account.
Now, for a wee bit of shameless self-promotion. I've just
written a book called The Internet Starter Kit for Macintosh
for Hayden Books, which is scheduled to appear at the end of
September or the beginning of October, although I always assume
the latter of two dates. I hate mentioning specific details until
things are available, or at least beyond the point of no return, but
suffice it to say that the contents of the book and the contents of
the included disk should make getting on the Internet far easier for
an individual.

Subject: Is THINK C 6.0 really that bad?
I remember when Symantec bought THINK. I thought "Gee, I hope they
leave the products pretty much the way they are. I hope they don't
forget people like THINK beta testers, like they forgot Norton Guides
(now THINK Reference) beta testers." I personally didn't get any
adverse fall-out from that, and THINK C 5 turned out to be a pretty
damn good release (I believe it was pretty much planned out before
Symantec started meddling).
I also remember when Symantec bought Zortech. My first thought was
"oh, shit!" We on the net knew that Zortech's C++ product on the Mac
was worthless. Nobody who bought it liked it. My greatest fear was
that Symantec would just dump it into a THINK environment and ship.
(That appears to be what they later did.)
Eventually I stewed and stewed to the point where I posted a rash
prediction. I posted, roughly, "Get your jollies out of THINK C 5,
because it will probably be the last usable version..." People were
so loyal (and justifiably, dammit!) to THINK that they laughed at
me. Now we have a Symantec C++ which includes a THINK-5-era C
compiler and a C++ compiler that sucks rocks. There hasn't been a
6.0.1, months after the release of 6.0, when there were almost
immediate maintenance releases after 4.0 and 5.0 (when presumably
THINK was still largely in control).
Symantec/THINK no longer has Kahl or Siegel, their original
architects. They don't appear to be able to ship a fixed C++. And
they're supposed to be the official anointed toolsmith for
PowerPC/Mac? How silly. Now I'll make another rash statement:
Symantec is probably the biggest obstacle to the success of MacOS on
PowerPC. Symantec could kill PowerPC/Mac.
This all makes me feel like all those PC/DOS idiots who base anti-Mac
arguments on Apple being a single source, or, in this case, a single
authority on development tools, are right. Microsoft won't be
building NT for PowerPC with Symantec tools, so it's not like Apple
will cease to exist. But MacOS might. Who wants to run NT, even if
it is on Apple hardware? Ugh.
Then again all I have to look forward to today is a room full of
five-year-olds screaming "Happy Birthday" at the top of their lungs
and punching each other in the stomach, so maybe I'm just projecting
my anxiety.

Subject: Magic Modem Revisited
Sit right down and I'll tell you a tale, a tale of disgusting woe...
So, I wanted to buy a modem, a real modem, a fast modem, a macho fax/modem.
I had it narrowed down to two contenders, the USRobotics Fax Sporster
(cute lil appelation, that, huh?) and the Supra 14.4 fax/modem with that
cute little LED display for the speed and stuff. The USR was cheaper than
the Supra, so I was most likely gonna go for that one. Well, I was
wandering through a Mac mag one day, in the mer month of August.
(just doesn't have the correct scansion does it?)
Anyway, there was this ad you see, an add for a beautiful
brand-spanking-new modem. The type, a Magic Modem, the company,
MacProducts USA. This is a 14.400 baud fax/modem with voice capabilities,
and all for $318!! Ohh! Joyous rapture! I can make my computer talk to
people on the phone, I can have voice mail, oh, joy is me, joy is me. I
ordered the puppy, after looking in a MacUser to see that while magic
modems were not the best in the world, they were also not the worst.
The modem came yesturday, so I unpacked it (doesn't work in the box very
well, you know) and tried to set it up. This was the start of my problems.
Problems with the Magic Modem VFX 14.4:
a) The power supply. The power supply was supplied with a
cord, that instead of having a plug you could plug in the wall, it
had a socket, for a regular computer/printer type power cord. I
should have suspected something there. But, I got the cord from the
copy machine I have, and used it. Ok so it plugs in now. This is
good. I turned it on.
b) The modem, when it is on is always on. Meaning, for
instance, when you pick up a phone, and you hear the dial-tone,
when you turn on this modem, and it is hooked into the phone line
(useless otherwise, isn't it?) the modem immediately has a
dial-tone. So. Interesting. Makes it bloody impossible for the
modem to answer the phone, doesn't it?? Well... ok, I think maybe I
can send it some sort of setting that will fix this. But, I'll try
to dial another computer and see what happens.
c) So, I start up my ZTerm program, and set it up for a nice zippy
fast
14.4 Hayes Compatable modem (says so, right here on the box, Hayes
command set compatable.) Then I tell it to dial my normal number. No
effect. No, not true, the modem has been on the phone for so long,
that
the little lady comes on and says, "If you want to dial a number,
please
hang up and try again." Ok. Fine. I can work around this too. So, I
turn
the modem off, get ready to have ZTerm dial the number, and turn the
modem back on, and send the dial command just a second later. Still no
dialing going on. The little lady comes back on the phone and says,
"If
you want to dial a computer please use a real modem." No, not really
she
didn't say that. But, she was thinking it, I could hear it in her
little
recorded voice.
So, after this, I give up and decide that this modem is not worth the
silicon it's chips were melted from and try to call up the customer support
line of MacProducts. No luck, they have the unmitigated gall to go home at
5pm EST. Bummer. So I wait until the next day, and then I call them up. I
talk to a very nice girl there, who asks what's wrong with it. I barely
refrain to say, "It's a dead modem, it's not resting, it's dead. A dead
modem." Instead, I outline, in my inordinately humorous way, the problems I
have with the modem, and I tell her that I want to send it back to MacProducts
for a full refund. She asks if I would rather get another Magic Modem, but
I (wisely, I think) decline. They let me know that they will issue me a
full credit, and they will even re-imburse me for the UPS shipping costs if
I fax them a copy of my UPS receipt to them. They really do have nice
people working thier phones, the salesman that I talked with prior to
ordering seemed to be knowledgable, and the girl I spoke with at the
customer service line (not an 800 number, but this is nit-picking) was very
nice, and was happy to help me out and get me a refund.
The grist of all this (really, there is a moral, or point to this, honest.)
is that the Magic Modem, in my opinion, sucks big rocks, and I wouldn't
even wish it on George Bush.
Now, Supra just lowered thier prices on thier modems to unbelievable lows,
so I was able to get a Supra 14.4 fax/modem for a mere $249 including next
day air shipping. (That was another thing, the Airborne Express Second day
air from MacProducts cost me $11, Mac Zone (where I am getting the Supra
from) only cost $3!) So, hopefully, the next time I telecompute from my
home, I'll be on my brand new zippy zippy Supra Modem. (Sounds like a
comics character. Look, down through the tele-wires, it's, it's it's Supra
Modem!!)
I would also like to add that I did get several replies to my earlier
inquiry about Magic Modem. One person said they were good, one said they
were bad. One person said they were the same as the Zoom modem (It's
really a TwinCom modem, both Zoom and MacProducts USA relabel it.) And why
wasn't I getting the Zoom modem because they had a seven year warranty. A
couple people were happy with thier USRobotics modems, and several said
they were happy with thier Zupra modems.

allotment to fit a document one wants to open. BTW if such a beast works with
the vanilla version of System 7, all the better.
Thank you.
Sincerely,

P.S. Thanks to those netters who replied to my earlier problem of hiding the
help menu. The solution reached a concensus, at getting Menuette, which does
just as it claims to do. In summary it makes the repetative menu items
icons, and allows you to pick a shorter width font for the other items.
Between that and SpeedyFinder 1.5.4 which actually has the option of hiding
Balloon Help, SuperClock is now visible all the time.
- I believe they are both shareware.

Greetings!
I am working with Brad Scott of the Vegetarian Resource Group to try and
find a Mac Programmer willing to convert The Vegetarian Game the group
created in the IBM environment to a Mac environment. As the
co-owner/administrator for VegLife, none of our 700+ members took the bate.
Where does one find a knowledgeable Mac programmer? Any help in finding
someone would be greatly appreciated.
The following is a quote from the game's readme file:
The files VEGGAME.EXE and VEGGAME.DAT must be in the same DOS
directory. The game can be played faster if these files are copied
onto a hard disk. To start the game, type VEGGAME from the DOS
prompt.
The Vegetarian Game presents questions relating to vegetarianism
>From any of six categories:
Health: Health and nutrition
Environment: How food choices affect the environment
Animal / Ethics: Animal rights or ethical choices
Food: Vegetarian foods
Famous Vegetarians: Vegetarians from sports, entertainment,
history, etc.
Pot Luck: Any of the above categories
Selecting a difficulty level:
Level 1 (Easiest) is for children age 5 to 9
Level 2 (Moderate) is for people age 10 or over or people new
to vegetarianism
Level 3 (Hardest) is for anyone with an advanced knowledge of
vegetarianism or anyone looking for a
challenge
Selecting a category:
When prompted, hit Q to quit, or hit any other key to randomly
select a category.
Answering the questions:
When the question is displayed, select your answer by hitting
1, 2, 3, or 4. If you are right, a message will say so. If
you are wrong, you will be told the correct answer.
The game ends after you quit or after you have been asked 25
questions. A summary will appear telling you how many
questions you got right and how many questions you were asked.
You may then play again, if you choose, by entering S when prompted.

Just shows, you can't please all of the people all of the time!
Personally I think SEAs are useful, not everyone has all the necessary
expanders
(although I keep Stuffit Expander on my desktop) and it's a real mother to
download a huge file only to find that you then have to go and hunt for some
utility to unpack the archive.
I also can't understand anyone in the UK using a 2400 baud modem - even at our
cheapest rate, it costs 0.07 (10 cents) a minute to connect, and a 2400 modem
will only do transfers at 250 bytes per second, maximum. For a 64K file, that
means at least four and a half minutes, whereas a 14,400 modem will do it in
45
seconds. Can't wait for V.FAST, myself.

Subject: Software Utilities v1.0--some interesting results
Sure enough Disk First Aid 7.2 found a problem on one my HD's that it
said it couldn't fix :-( Soooo....I tried Central Point's MacTools 2.0.
MacTools offered to repair the problem, read the drive for a couple of
minutes, spent nearly ten minutes churning the CPU, the wrote back to
the drive for a couple of minutes, only to conclude at the end that it
was "unable to analyze the directory" :-(
I resorted to Norton's Disk Doctor (the one that persistently disagrees
with Disk First Aid and PC Tools about the B-Tree header record). Norton's
Emergency Disk started in on the problem and then complained about not
having enough memory (apparently, too many files on the disk??). So, I
tried running Norton off another HD with the RAM allocation set to 2MB and
THAT fixed the problem (Thank goodness!!). DFA 7.2 is now happy with all
my drives.
The one thing I don't like about DFA 7.2 is that if Verify finds a problem
it doesn't offer to repair, and running repair starts the whole analysis
over from the beginning. It appears that running 'repair' in the first
place is the desirable action.
I've noticed two interesting quirks with MacCheck:
1. If one double clicks the data file or clicks both the app and data and
then launches, MacCheck says that it is "unable to read MacCheck.data
because it is "the wrong type of document" (it lies--It's already read
the data by the time that message appears). Launching just the app
avoids the message.
2. MacCheck also often incorrectly pronounces applications "not 32-bit clean"
(I'm running a 20 MByte system and have 32-bit enabled all the time as a
consequence; hence all my apps work just fine--including the dozen or
so MacCheck says aren't 32-bit clean). I take it that older apps haven't
set some bit that 'certifies' the app as 32-bit clean?? I conclude that
the correct reading of the message should be "MAY not be 32-bit clean"
(some of those apps my not like virtual, I haven't cleared enough HD
space to try that).

I installed the Hardware System Update 2.0 on my Centris 650 and IIvx with the
Easy Install option. With extensions off, the sound control panel works fine,
but if I let my extension/control panels load, opening the sound control panel
results in either a bomb box with a bad F-line or a complete blanking of the

Rebuilding the desktop doesn't help, and even disabling the "Record button"

The Centris has system 7.1, 8 megs RAM, 32 bit and VM off, with the following
extensions/control panels: Virex 4.0, Norton Backup 2.0, EM extension 2.0, CE
toolbox 1.6.1, Quicktime 1.6.1, Remember 2.3.2, Adobe type align 1.03, ATM

Subject: SPSS Macintosh WHY it often unexpec quits and how to avoid it!
I've been getting unexpectedly quit crashes in SPSS Macintosh
since I started using system 7 way back when. It was sporradic,
so, I put up with it, not wanting to use the otherwise excellent
product on another platform, or with sytem 6. Not that that sytem
6 is an option now with my Quadra anyway.
I've called SPSS about this from the start. I never got a good
expanation for it until about a week ago. I lost some work then,
was a bit miffed, and called to see if anyone there had figured it
out yet, or if we lowly Mac users would see the new, version 6 SPSS
anytime soon. (Not until mid to late 1994 is the new version
expected to ship. Apparently there is still a lot of work to be
done. Of course, the Windoze product isn't half as old as the Mac
one and has alread undergone 2 major revisons. Hense the skip of
the Mac version from 4.04 (current) to 6.0.)
OK, so I'm taking awhile to get to the point. Sorry. If you have
any window other than a command (text) or output window active when
you click to the finder (I think other programs, too--any "context
switch") you will get the dreaded quit quite unexpectedly. Of course,
now you know WHY, so it should be QUITE so unexpected.
BTW, they're only suggestion is to maximize the window settings such
that you are less likely to click elsewhere without thinking of it.
This is a pathetic attempt to deal with the problem, IMHO. Sorry
to flame, but even calling up the command generator CAUSES the windows
to "unmaximize" and that's one of the very windows that cause the
problem in the first place.
Now I just try to close any of these accessory windows right after
using them. Find/Replace were the only ones I really used that
much anyway.

Am I the only one who dislikes the "new" organization of the sumex
directories? I used to be able to find things in under a minute. Now is
seems I have to search and search and search, often not finding what I want
and having to send messages to the posters that have mentioned this or that
to find out where they found things. For example. I just spent 15 minutes
trying to find the latest version of SuperClock. I looked everywhere.
"configuration, "user interface", "utilities", etc. The very last place I
would think to look would be "application" since a control panel is NOT an
application. And in fact, after searching EVERY directory before
application, I thought "what the heck, maybe someone made a mistake and put
it in there not knowing that it's not an application."
What was wrong with looking for DAs under DAs? Control Panels under Control
Panels? At least then you had a pretty good idea. I mean, SuperClock. Hmm.
It effects the user interface of my computer. It is a means of configuring
my computer. It's a utility thing. It's all of these things. It is a
Control Panel. It is NOT an application.

Summary:
The majority of the answers indicated tn3270 from brown university (freeware)
to be the prefered product for this. It is built around the kernel of NCSA
Telne
It can be downloaded in severl ways, and from different Hosts.
I downloaded it from its home host - "brownvm.brown.edu".
The current version is 2.4a4 which is an update to version 2.3d26. You have to
download both to have the complete set. The 2.3d26 comes in three versions:
tn3d26.seabin ; tn3d26im.seabin (an image file) ; and tn3d26.seahqx (and of
cour
also tn3d26im.seahqx). I didn't manage to download tn3d26.bin as binary,
using
Fetch, and had to download the tn3d26.seahqx instead.
The tn24a4.seahqx comes only in .hqx format, so no choices here. There are
also
source files for all.
Two additional file sets allows you to download and upload files between the
mac
and the CMSmachine: WMAC and RMAC. Download the read-me files to find
more about these.
Alternatley you can get the files (as suggested):
By FTP from "ftp.brown.edu" in pub/mac/tn3270
By Email to LISTSERV@BrownVM.Brown.Edu
(subject ignored)
GET TN3270 $PACKAGE .
By FTP from "ftp.ncsc.uiuc.edu"
By Gopher from University of Minnesota.
A different set of aplications, suggested (and made) by Apple, are "SNA*ps

a 3287 emulator , a 5250 emulator and a 3812 emulator.

Is there a free/shareware that is an equivalent to UNIX's "more" or "less"?
What I want is a document reader that will let me read through the document
one page at a time as I type spacebar. A less-like program will be even more
convenient by letting me back up one page when I type 'b' or half a page when
I type 'u'. Between two neighboring pages there should be a one or two lines
overlap so I won't be lost at all. (Optionally, this program will let me do
search on the file: / for forward search and ? for backward search.)
If anyone knows of something like this on MacOS (ie, w/o MPW or A/UX), please
email me.
Thank you.

Subject: URGENT ADB KEYBOARD PROBLEMS! HELP! (A)
>Using Keycaps, I can see that all the other keys work fine, 'cept for that
one darn key...this is very very VERY aggravating, since I cannot type
anything with that key held down. I need some help, any help! I would be
willing to open up the keyboard to examine switches if someone would show me
how to do such a thing....
Keyboards are really easy to open up. I'll bet that you have something
shorting across the contacts for that particular key. Get a screw driver
that fits the keyboard screws and unscrew all the screws. The keyboard
should just open and you should be able to remove the plastic top and
bottom. Pay attenion to how it folds into the plastic shells so that you
can put it back together again.
You should not need to remove any of the key caps off of the switches (and
in fact, without the proper tools I suggest that you do not even attempt to
remove any key caps, too easy to break the key stems or lose or bend small
parts).
Shake the keyboard, and see if you can clean away any junk in the plastic
shells and on the keyboard circuit board.
As always, don't shuffle your feet on wool carpet (or any other movement
that creates static) while working with the keyboard. Just sit down, open
it, touch the circuit board to equalize your potential with the keyboard,
do what you need to do and then put it back together again.
You might wonder why I openned my keyboard, well, I spilled Coca Cola into
my keyboard and believe me, Coke and keyboards are a bad combination. I had
to remove all the keycaps (my wife has a key cap pulling tool), take apart
all the key switches, and clean every teeny tiny part with rubbing alcohol.
A couple of switches were beyond repair and I scavanged replacements off a
dead keyboard. Finally got it back in shape and working. But, in over 15
years of setting drinks down near keyboards, one event is not too bad a
record. I'm a bit more careful with Coca Cola but otherwise business as
usual.

I've found the most consistent application to be UUTool, from Bernie Wieser.
I believe I got it at sumex. It's freeware. If it's not there I can upload
it.

Generally, no. The difference between 8x256 and 9x256 (or 8x1024 or whatever
density for that matter) is that PCs have an extra chip that is used for a
parity check. The only Macs that had that were a special variant of the IIfx,
which Apple produced to meet government purchasing specs.

Subject: Wish list for shareware/freeware
Dear Netters,
Is there any shareware/freeware available via anonymous FTP/Gopher
that does the following:
1. Turn off those startup extension icons of the extensions that don't offer
an
off switch?
2. A method of clipping off the menu bar items into windows of there own that
works globally?
3. MacroMaker at a version later than 1.0.2?
4. Automatic compression/decompression like AutoDoubler, in order to save disk
space, but not at the driver level?
5. A file recovery program?
6. A program to reduce the pixel size from 640 x 480 to 512 x 384 for us
"unforetunate" owners of the 12" RGB? Still a great screen, but surprisingly
people are still posting to sumex-aim.stanford.edu archives shareware/freeware
that only works with 640 x 400 minimum, or 640 x 480 minimum. Such a program
would only need to do 8bit (256 color) graphics. Buying a 13" or larger
screen isn't an option for me as I am barely able to carry my Macintosh as it
is in my I/O design bag due to the weight of the machine with the monitor.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
ABRODY@VAX.CLARKU.EDU
Disclaimer: 12" RGB is referring to Apple's 12" RGB Monitor released in 1991
and soon discontinued by some point in 1992.
I/O design is simply the bag I use, and I have no other relation to that
company.

I have a WorldBlazer and it generally works fine. However, there were
some early problems with the WorldBlazers, so you might want to give
Telebit a call and ask about an upgrade. It's also entirely possible
that the cable is bad - try a couple of others (but you'll need a
hardware handshaking cable to use the full speed of the WorldBlazer).

Subject: WriteNow vs. Nisus vs. MS Word (Q)
Dear Netters,
has anyone made a good comparison of these three word processors in terms of
features?
For anyone still looking for a simple and fast word processor, at least now,
nobody can beat the price MacZone is selling WriteNow 3.0 at: $35.98 +
shipping and handeling of $3. See there current catalog (with sale dated to
end September 15th). 1-800-248-0800. I mention this as people can't seem to
decide whether Nisus or MS Word is better, from what I read here, and I
thought WriteNow would be some interesting fuel to add to the debate.
I have used WriteNow for 3 years now, finding the spell checker extremely
fast, though from what I hear Nisus uses many of the same features as
WriteNow. So what can Nisus do more than WriteNow in addition to multiple
undos and multi-document searches not being on WriteNow?
Just curious as ever.
Sincerely,
ABRODY@VAX.CLARKU.EDU
